DON - When the River Froze
A downloadable game
In January 1943, the 200,000-strong Hungarian Second Army — dug in along a bend of the Don River to shield the German flank near Stalingrad — was overrun by the Soviet winter offensive and destroyed within days. Tens of thousands died in the retreat through snow and sub-zero cold, with many more wounded, captured, or never accounted for; it remains one of the single deadliest catastrophes in Hungarian military history, and Hungary still marks the anniversary of the breakthrough every year.
This game doesn't try to re-stage that battle. It tries to make you sit with the people who were in it.
You don't advance. You don't retreat. You hold one position, aiming with your mouse across a frozen, unforgiving horizon — ducking into cover when the fire gets close, rising to shoot when you dare. Enemies appear in the distance; you take the shot, or you don't, and you live with what happens next.
But the real fight here isn't the one in your sights. While you hold the line, you hear your soldier's life unfold in narration — who he was, what he wanted, what he was afraid of, the mistakes he carries and the small things he's still proud of. Duck for cover, and his voice goes quiet. Take a bullet, and it cuts off mid-sentence — and you move on to the next soldier, and the next story.
There are eight of them. Four fought for Hungary. Four fought for the Soviet Union. Listen to all eight, and a picture emerges that has nothing to do with flags or ideology: on both sides of the sight line were people who never met each other, who had little to do with why the war was being fought, and who mostly endured it rather than shaped it.

A narrative historical shooter, built in Unity. Hold your ground, pan the battlefield with your mouse, duck for cover or rise to fire and listen to 8 soldiers' stories.
Made for the Historically Accurate game jam, 2026.
